RUMORS |
|
|
Ten years ago, TST toured a program called Rumors to middle
and intermediate
schools in Hawaii. The cast of young adults riveted the focus of antsy
adolescents with cautionary tales about the dynamics of gossip. Then, as
now, teachers and principals report that the lion's share of verbal and physical
violence on school property is often initiated by gossip and always gossip
propelled. Our constituency, remembering the impact of the program, asked for another round.
In 2004, with media support for curriculum and contact, ADE helped a new generation of 11-13 year olds to better understand and manage their own behavior. Rumors tour package included pre and post program curriculum, "hot" terms for students to adapt into everyday language, and options for the schools to involve the greater community (parents, shopping malls, storekeepers, etc.) in the campaign against gossip.
