KALIHI WORKS |
|
Beginning with enormous backing from FHS principal Catherine Payne, ADE has strong ties with most of the Kalihi Schools and has developed an initiative called Kalihi Works: with ADE at each Kalihi school. The vision is for every 2nd, 5th, 7th and 9th grader in Kalihi to have a chance to "rehearse for life" with ADE in their classroom.
After this incremental exposure, at what educators consider the most important transition years, kids can participate in T-Shirt Theatre and begin the process of giving back to their community by participating in envoy teaching tours to elementary feeder schools, volunteer service projects, and performances at retirement homes. Then after graduation, the T-Shirt Theatre alumni can go full circle in KALIHI WORKS and, while in advanced training or college settings, can become paid intern artist-educators who go back to Kalihi classrooms to pass their knowledge and experience on to their relatives and neighbors.
The wheel upon which Kalihi ADE turns evolved spoke by spoke through two decades of trial and error response to area problems. 1. Gett!ng Dramat!c: we were originally brought to Kalihi to tame unruly audiences through 5-session residencies that build their performance poise and empathy for others in the spotlight. 2. School-to-work: FHS innovated work readiness academies and called on ADE to devise role-playing and conflict-minimizing workshops. 3. TST: some youngsters' talent shone so brightly we launched an after school theatre group to showcase their art and writing and to seed their interest in teach. 4. Gett!ng Dramat!c apprentices: a few TST vets graduated with such an abundance of coaching skill and commitment that they had to be trained as community educators and role models. 5. Freelance artist-educators: the most artful interns returned to become our curriculum innovators and classroom mentors. Honolulu Advertiser Article on Honolulu Hot Wheels
